I designed and created this infographic for the MIT Tech Review with Infographics.com, which visualizes the supplies where various rare minerals are produced:

Wind turbines, electric vehicles, light-emitting diodes, flat-screen displays, and solar panels all rely on elements that are mined and refined in just a few countries and traded in small quantities. Demand for many of these elements is expected to grow rapidly as these technologies become more commonly used, and impending supply constraints could hold back their growth. - Mike Orcutt at MIT TECH REVIEW

To quote the foundation: “Arts and culture play a significant role in the daily lives of Californians. The state is noteworthy for the avid participation of its people, the diversity and abundance of its arts organizations and the varied regional characteristics of its arts sector. California’s regions reflect distinctive populations, participation rates, numbers and types of arts and culture organizations, and levels of arts funding. New findings generated by Markusen Economic Research and commissioned by the Irvine Foundation offer fresh illustrations of the California nonprofit arts sector and the people who take part in it.”

While at Infographics.com, I was one of two designers tapped to create over 80 figures one of TIME Magazine’s most influential people, physicist Lisa Randall. We were challenged with the task of creating a series of diagrams that visualized complex concepts like multidimensional universes, particle collisions, and dark matter, all within the constraints of a traditional, grey-scale book.

For this project I created a demonstration video to highlight a data driven Flash interactive created by Infographics.com. I wrote and edited the script, designed and executed the animation, and created the music and sound design.

The animation is designed to clearly highlight how the animation works, and some of the details of our design process in creating it.

Web design for Miguel Gutierrez, a respected and prolific member of the contemporary dance scene in New York and internationally. Design goals for the site include, updating his existing brand and broadening his site to include more information while maintaining usability. The client wanted to create the balance between a more ‘homemade’ or ‘dated’ look with modern web functionality. Traditional usability goals were often put aside to create a slightly confusing and visually engaging site. The design showcases the artists content, while also existing as it’s own artifact.

RISK/LOGIC

Risk/Logic investigates the distinct and organized subculture of barebakcing through its own words by sourcing text from its prolific blogging community, and representing this text to a wider audience.

The project consists of a glass book, laser-etched with key entries from blogs where men discuss barebacking, as well as raw data and analysis from contrasting sources such as the Center for Disease Control. These blog entries are the heart of the piece, and are laid out to form an abstract narrative. As the book progresses, major themes are revealed including: knowingly taking HIV+ semen into one’s body, dealing with criticism from others, the act of knowingly seroconverting an HIV- person, struggling with a sense of inevitability of contracting the virus, the notion that HIV is no longer the death sentence it once was, and the complex logic that justifies this risky sexual behavior.

Glass is fragile, beautiful, sharp and strong. If you aren’t careful, this book could cut you. This book could break in your hands. The laser etching is difficult to read unless the light hits it the right way. The viewer must be in close proximity to the object in order to decipher its meaning. The object forces the viewer to deal with difficult text extremely close up. It is simultaneously inviting and repulsive, drawing the viewer in with its aesthetics but pushing them away with the fear of breaking it. When sitting on top of each other, the panes reveal a three-dimensional array of text and meaning that can’t be read, but can be understood.
